Greens Committee – Course Report

Dear member
The constant rain, and on many occasions heavy rain throughout November and particularly December, has left the golf course much wetter than for many years resulting in poor playing conditions and forcing its closure more frequently than we would like. It also hindered plans to undertake any work to try and improve problems on and around the course, as it prevented the use of machinery on the course.
Indeed, many courses in South East Wales have also been closed owing to the dreadful weather, some for days at a time, some still closed. However,we recognise that we have issues that must be addressed and will seek to do so.
The Composite Course was devised to try and avoid the wettest areas and allow golf to be played where otherwise the course would have been closed. This has had some success and we perhaps need to look at this in more detail to see if further changes could be made that could be more beneficial. Of course this is very much an alternative solution and we need to plan and aim for the longer term.
Although some remedial work has been carried out in the past few years (e.g. ditch across 2nd, 3rd, and 4th holes) the situation still exists where we are vulnerable during periods of heavy rainfall, and the last few months has highlighted significant problems with drainage, which has understandably caused continuing frustration to members and management alike.
The Greens committee has spent time over the past week walking the course and have identified the worst areas and are in the process of drawing up a plan of action that hopefully, year on year, will improve conditions underfoot.
Of course this is not an exact science, and we cannot simply assume that by digging ditches, drainage channels, or soakaways we will be successful, as identifying water sources correctly is difficult. You can be assured that we will strive to make every effort, where possible, that this work is undertaken.
We would be happy to meet any members who have any feedback and constructive comments they wish to discuss.
Finally, may we thank all members for their patience and understanding.
